27th Annual 4th of July Parade - "American Mosaic" 


The Ann Arbor Jaycees are proud to announce our Grand Marshal for our 2017 as a pillar of our community and long-time LGBTQ activist and educator, Jim Toy. 

James W. "Jim" Toy earned his B.A. at Denison University in 1951. He holds a master's degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Michigan and serves as a pro bono counselor and therapist. Toy retired from his role the diversity coordinator in the Office of Institutional Equity  University of Michigan in 2008 . He is a trained mediator and a trainer for the AFSC Inclusive Justice Program’s non-violent-dialogue training.

His accompliments include the establishment of the Human Sexuality Office at U of M, the first of its kind at the collegiete level, work with the Episcopial Diocese of Michigan, and various LGBTQ wellness initiatives. The Jim Toy Community Center, Ann Arbor resource center that exists to provide LGBTQ information, education, social events, and advocacy has been named in his honor.

Parade Route Map: The route is approximately 1 mile long and begins at the intersection of State Street and William Street.

Commercial and political entries are required to pay a $50 entry fee to participate. Participants can either mail a check to the Ann Arbor Jaycees Foundation, 4th of July Parade, P.O. Box 1866, Ann Arbor, MI 48106 or pay via PayPal at http://a2jcf.org/Parade.

Bike Decorating Contest

Preregistration is encouraged and all children preregistered will receive a free goodie bag! Participants are asked to arrive between 8-9AM at the corner of State St. and E. William St. in Ann Arbor on July 4th. Judging will begin promptly at 9:30AM with the Parade to follow at 10AM. A parent or guardian must be present during the Parade and must sign a waiver. Children under the age of 5 must be escorted by a responsible adult along the parade route. Please remember to wear a helmet! 

Fourth of July Window Art Competition

The Ann Arbor Jaycees are encouraging businesses surrounding the parade route to participate in a window art competition. In the celebration of American Independence we are titling this year’s parade theme “American Mosaic” and ask any who are willing to participate to paint or decorate their windows in agreement with the theme.
